Mascaras

Mascara is used to thicken, darken, and add definition to the eyelashes. It usually comes in tube and wand sets, with the spiral-tipped wand stored inside the tube as applicator. Many wands are specially curved to add an upward curl to the lashes. Most mascaras are also made from film formers, wax thickeners, dyes, and a combination of water and preservatives. Some of them may contain synthetic fibers such as nylon or rayon, which are left on the lashes to add length and thickness.
Types of Mascara
Mascaras come in three main forms: cream, liquid, and cake:
- A cream mascara has a thick, semi-solid consistency. Although it is the heaviest type of mascara, it also has the strongest hold , which is ideal for all-day makeup. This type best suits women who have fine, limp lashes that need extra shape definition.
- A liquid mascara is usually darker when applied. The applicator used for this type of mascara is usually lighter and thinner, which helps prevent dripping. For lashes that are light-colored or thick and well-shaped, it is best to use a liquid mascara.
- A cake mascara is in pressed powder form, much like a foundation or blush. They come in a wider range of shades-- some are even dusted with glitter to give your eyes more accent. You can use a cake mascara alone, however, it may also be used as finishing touches after putting on cream or liquid mascaras.
Composition
Mascaras can also be waterproof or non-water resistant:
- A waterproof mascara is made from various waxes, pigments, and film-forming polymers. This is good for all-day affairs where you expect to sweat or tear up. It can only be removed with special makeup removers, so make sure you always have one.
- A non-water resistant mascara has no add-ons; it may easily run when wet or moist. It is easier to remove, but it seldom lasts more than three hours. A non-water resistant mascara is best during short affairs such as shows and parties. When using one, always bring a container with you for touchups.
